Sanilac District Library's Aviation Collection was established by Michigan Aviation Education Foundation (MAEF) member, William Ruhstorfer, as a tribute to Nancy Walters, a highly respected Michigan General Aviation Pilot and friend to all who know her.  SDL's aviation collection has developed into a model for the ongoing MAEF Library Program, a statewide effort begun in 1994, to encourage and enhance aviation collections in local libraries throughout Michigan.

The Aviation Collection is offered to library patrons who aim for an aviationBillRpilot career, want to learn to fly for personal enjoyment, or have known the fascination of flight and want to keep proficiency, memories and interest alive. People like "Just Plane Bill", who can't keep their feet on the ground. To most people, the sky is the limit. To those who love aviation, the sky is home. To them life is simple. Eat, Sleep, Fly.

William Martin Ruhstorpher passed away at the age of 91 on August 14, 2014. He served in the United States Army during WWII.  "Just Plane Bill" was a private pilot and a lifetime member of Michigan Aviation Association.  nancy4Nancy Walters, a Sanilac County native, is President of MAEF and was inducted into the Forest of Friendship by Michigan's aviation community. Mrs. Walters is active in two volunteer organizations that provide first flights for children. Aircraft owner pilots gather at Michigan airports to introduce lines of excited youngsters to the sights and feel of flying. Nancy is credited with hundreds of Young Eagles  and Challenge Air flights in her personal quest to discover and encourage new generations of aviation minded individuals.

The MAEF was founded by Mary R. Creason, a Sanilac native, as a non-profiMAEFt organization that promotes and encourages interest in aviation through Aviation Education Programs. Along with promoting library aviation collections, the MAEF offers grants for: Aviation Career Scholarships and and Aviation Career Education Camps  (ACE Camps).

Sanilac District Library is a grant recipient and Honor Roll Library as commended by the Michigan Aviation Education Foundation (MAEF).  Funds from the grant were used toward the purchase of shelving units and materials for the Aviation Collection.
