April 10th, 1857

The market very dull, no meat, no butter. What can a man do when once starved out? Shingles still create good price but few in the market. But as the editor of the Times is below now, when he comes back, we shall be well supplied with butter, pork and what not.

That is to say if he don’t get tight and loose all his money.

 

May 15th, 1857

Business dull, weather bad, flour high, pork high, shingles dull and a good demand for cash as we are going to have a set tonight at the house of Laban Ferguson.

The first ball of the season to be held at the house of L. Ferguson. Admission free and all the good things in the bargain. Gilbert  Manager     L. Ferguson  Proprietor

It is proposed by some to let every tub stand on its own bottom.

It is also agitated by some to get a telegraph line established from Lexington to this place.
