Sanilac District Library provides free Internet access points for users with portable battery operated computers or devices capable of receiving wireless signals, during normal library business hours. Access is prohibited outside the building. Access to the Internet is available to all patrons with a valid library card; however, this service may be restricted at any time for use not consistent with Sanilac District Library’s Policies. Parents of minor children assume responsibility for their children's use of the library's Internet service.

The Library cannot guarantee that the service will be available at any specific time, nor can the Library accept reservations for wireless access. Wireless service provides a way to access the same Internet resources available from SDL’s public access computers from the convenience of your own device. This service also allows you to connect to Internet resources using your own software programs. You may also download and upload data and files directly to and from your own device.

Library staff provide general information on the settings necessary to access the Internet via these connections, but are not responsible for any changes made to the user's device settings and cannot guarantee that hardware will work with the library's wireless connection. Library staff may not install, configure or repair any hardware or software in a patrons’ laptop or mobile device.

Service Requirements

·   Use of SDL’s wireless access or wifi plug-in station constitutes acceptance of Sanilac District Library policies and Hold Harmless Agreement.

·   Up-to-date virus is required for use of SDL’s wifi internet services.

·   Users must provide their own up-to-date virus protection.

·   Users are prohibited from plugging any cord or any device into library computers, equipment or any electrical outlets except those designated by SDL for this purpose. Cords and equipment must be arranged so as not to cause a safety hazard to other patrons.

If a user has problems accessing the Internet over these connections, staff will verify the library's connections are running, but cannot assist in making changes to the user's network settings or perform any troubleshooting on the user's own device. Users should refer to owner's manuals or other support services offered by the device manufacturer.

Sanilac District Library cannot guarantee the security of your computer. As with most public wireless "hot spots," the library's wireless connection is not secure. Any information being sent or received could potentially be intercepted by another wireless user.  Users should be aware that the Internet is not a secure medium and that third parties may be able to obtain information regarding users’ activities.  Sanilac District Library will not release information on the use of specific Internet resources by members of the public except as required by law.

A printer is available via the wireless connection. Or you may choose to email files to yourself, register to use a wired library workstation, access your e-mail account and send jobs to the public printer.  All print jobs are sent to a common printer located at the Circulation Desk. Printouts are charged the regular copying fee. All printing must be completed fifteen minutes before closing.

Use of wireless access points is governed by SDL’s Internet Acceptable Use Policy and by using this service you agree to abide by it. All users are expected to use the library's wireless access in a legal and responsible manner consistent with the educational and informational purposes for which it is provided.  As stated in the library's acceptable use policy, users may not violate federal, state or local laws, including the transmission or receiving of child pornography or harmful material, fraud, or downloading copyrighted material. Violations of the terms of this policy, other library policies or use of the network for abusive, malicious or illegal activity will result in a loss of access and may be subject to prosecution.

The Library assumes no responsibility for compromised information or damage, theft, or loss of any kind to a user’s equipment, software, data files, or other personal belongings brought into or used on Library property. It is the responsibility of all wireless access users to have up-to-date virus protection on their laptop computer or wireless device. The Library assumes no responsibility for any alterations or interference with a laptop’s or mobile device’s configuration, operation, or data files resulting from connection to the wireless network.

Patrons shall defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Sanilac District Library, its officers, employees, and agents against all claims, actions, and judgments based upon or arising out of the patron’s use of Library wireless connections. Sanilac District Library reserves the right to take appropriate action to ensure compliance with this policy.

Virtual Services Policy

Sanilac District Library contracts with third party companies to provide virtual services which are made available to patrons via the library’s website. These services include but are not limited to DigitalTotes, OverDrive, MeL, MelCat, RBDigital and AutoGraphics Verso. Sanilac District Library complies with restrictions and policies mandated by these companies.

Patrons may reserve materials via the SDL’s online catalog and access their own circulation information.  Patrons who access another individual’s circulation records will lose library privileges and may be subject to prosecution.
